The Doll World...As I Know It Today
August 13, 2009
Our porcelain doll making world is quite different today than it was 5 or 10 years ago. The important thing is; it still exists.
It is still happening, on a smaller scale, and with some challenges and many changes. There are many talented doll makers and instructors still making and teaching our beloved art form.
All Dolled Up, Inc. has certainly changed – we are now located at Jean’s home, in a smaller classroom space, but comfortable and a very relaxed atmosphere. There are still six class times available, and all the comforts of home, including fresh coffee and snacks! Make sure you check out the 'Services' page on the left for more information and a detailed class brochure!
Everyone who attends classes at All Dolled Up can work on any project they choose, at their own pace. Jean, who has earned her Master Doll Maker (MDM) degree [from the Doll Artisan Guild - Seeley’s], is available to help with any technique. She has also earned Dianna Effner’s teacher certificate as well and can teach the “three dimensional portraiture” painting methods.
Several ladies just finished a multiple class costume for Lady Olevia, a 24” Simon and Halbig antique reproduction lady doll on a composition body. The patterns for her clothing were duplicated from an original antique trousseau belonging to one of the students. Lady Olevia is wearing pantaloons, chemise, waist cincher, walking suit of houndstooth check, and blouse of fine Swiss cotton batiste. She also sports a silk beret to match. A silk lined cape with coordinating hat, trimmed with a beautiful feather and velvet flowers was also made. In addition, she has a third hat to add to her collection. We still have plans to make leather boots and stockings. One of the wonderful trunks from Hobby Lobby or an antique store would be perfect to store all her hand made creations.
Several students are “Bleuette” collectors and are providing complete wardrobes and accessories for her. Others are excited about getting the small French lady bodies and starting her collection of reproduction gowns and accoutrements. We have several molds for heads that fit the 9” composition body.
AND of course there are those that prefer modern dolls only. There are over 300 molds to choose from in that category available - - So many dolls, never enough time.
So, if you’ve always thought you’d like to make dolls, DO IT.
It’s fun, it’s relaxing, and most of all...IT'S THERAPY!
