Doll Studio Helps Students Create Handmade Heirlooms
Colorado Springs, CO -- Feb 26, 2003 -- By Jeanette Jackman - The Slice
Jean Edsall has trays of arms, legs and heads stacked on shelves in a corner of her store. The body parts belong to her students.
The trays are full of porcelain doll pieces her students are making into dolls.
Edsall owns All Dolled Up, 4785 Barnes Road, a studio where people can create porcelain dolls and hand-painted china.
Edsall started creating dolls 14 years ago when she visited a ceramics studio that carried porcelain doll pieces. “Until then, I had no idea that you could make your own porcelain dolls,” Edsall said. “I have loved dolls since I was a young child. This gave me the way to create the dolls I love.”
Edsall’s studio has molds for more than 600 porcelain pieces. With the pieces, students can create dolls from two worlds. “I have patterns for modern dolls and patterns made from antique dolls,” Edsall said. Most students create modern dolls.
Edsall holds seven classes a week. During the classes students work on sanding, painting, costuming and assign other touches to their dolls.
Sue Hardy has made porcelain dolls at All Dolled Up for more than two years. “I love coming here and working on my dolls. It is cheaper than therapy and a whole lot more fun,” Hardy said.
Suzanne Calhoun said she enjoys porcelain doll making because it incorporates all the crafts she loves. “I love her studio because I can come work on my dolls and leave the mess behind me,” Calhoun said. “Doll making was very easy to learn, and is so relaxing for me.”
Edsall began offering a china painting class February 15 in addition to her doll making classes. Linda Blaze, who has more than 15 years of experience, teaches the china painting course. “China painting is a lost art,” Edsall said. “China painting and doll making create beautiful heirlooms that can be enjoyed for a long time.”
