Studio Report - Introducing Our Studio ... All Dolled Up In Colorado Springs, Colorado
Colorado Springs, CO -- Nov 1, 2001 -- All Dolled Up began over five years ago and was the outgrowth of a dream. This dream was the combination of many abilities, desires and experiences. With a lifelong love of dolls and an extensive background in ceramics, sewing, teaching and office experience, Jean feels this doll studio is the niche she was destined to fill. "Jean gives the right balance between instruction and assistance to build confidence," says Olivia Bennett.
Jean has extensive education in the doll field and has received her 'Master of Doll Making' title. She continues keeping up on new techniques and product information and is qualified to teach both antique reproduction and modern doll techniques. There is a program of certified seminars through the Doll Artisan Guild.
Jean’s husband, Grant, is not only her business partner but is the ‘Master Caster.’ He is well known for his ‘perfect’ greenware. Organization is key for a successful business. The molds were catalogued from the beginning and Grant designed his pouring room to his specifications. There is a very organized system of pouring and keeping track of orders.
The studio provides ‘therapy’ to over 85 students at present. Mary Davis says, "Taking classes at All Dolled Up is like coming home. It is like a family reunion with all being very supportive and helpful. Jean encourages us to do something different." There have been tea parties, potluck suppers, seminars, sewing classes, field trips and group trips to doll shows, fabric shops and museums.
Jean has some great tips on getting students. She advertises in the yellow pages, posts fliers at fabric stores and grocery stores. She says word-of-mouth is usually the best form of advertising. A satisfied customer is worth her weight in gold. Newsletters to customers and students inform them of specials, seminars and events. Jean loves her work and says, "You need to learn how to work smart." She has the students display their dolls in the studio for a while, which encourages the students along with giving others ideas.
